Summer is on the way. OK, as l am writing this the rain is beating against the window and the wind is howling, but I stand by my hopeful statement. It was in this hope of a nice summer break in the UK that I came across an article which, while a couple of years old, did give me a bit of a surprise.
Did you know that over 30% of people are likely to have their main holiday in the UK? Add to this the casual weekend or mid-week break because the sun shows itself and you can see that the seasonal holiday market alone is huge.
We know the summer holiday season generates some interesting opportunities from our clients but it’s sometimes overlooked by candidates as a potential work option.
Here are five good reasons why you may want to consider seasonal summer work this year.
- It could give you the opportunity to ‘dip your toe in the water’ and look at a different career path. Because seasonal work is temporary, you can often use it to try out a new field.
- It can give you additional skills. The variety of work available can really help your skills list on your CV.
- It may lead to something bigger and better. Sometimes, although the work you are doing is seasonal, it turns permanent or other opportunities present themselves.
- It can give you an extra reference. It is very often the case that seasonal work is there because of the increase in business for a company and the job may simply not exist for the rest of the year. It’s quite common that seasonal workers will be really liked and do a great job but there is just not the job there for them in the long run. However, there is never a problem with a glowing reference saying how well you did and what a great employee you were.
- If you take your holiday out of season – it can help pay for it. This seems like a small thing at first but if you are able to take your break later in the year the money you earn working the summer will go a lot further. Many candidates use summer work to pay for a much better holiday out of season.
It could be a brilliant opportunity
Overall if you are free to take the work, the summer season presents a brilliant opportunity to broaden your experience, gain new friends and contacts and even start a career, and all while being paid quite well in the bargain.
Sadly, we can’t do anything about the weather except hope it works out fine, but if you would like to chat about summer opportunities or are considering seasonal work, then please get in touch and we will be happy to see what we can do for you.
