One of the odd things about our industry is that some recruitment companies seem to have very few long-term team members. Perhaps it’s because of the close-knit nature of the crew or perhaps it’s because we are not one of the nationwide corporate names, but here at Personnel selection staff regularly stay with us for many years.
If you have been a client or candidate of Personnel Selection, particularly at our Frimley hub, you will probably have met our branch manager, Emma Ganner, and you would remember her because she is just that sort of bubbly, lively personality that everyone likes to spend time with.
However, Emma is not someone to be taken lightly she has over 13 years of experience in recruitment, was our Employee of the year in 2015, and helped guide her branch to be the branch of the year in the same period. Emma is now a force to be reckoned with – but at the start of her career, it was another story.
Having completed her degree in Business and Marketing, she found herself unsure of the next step. As she puts it herself:
“I got my degree because I knew I wanted to get it but, like a lot of graduates I suppose, I didn’t really have a fixed career goal in mind. So I came to Personnel Selection as a candidate initially.”
Emma was as impressive 13 years ago as she is now. The Personnel Selection staff at the time recognised her potential and suggested she consider recruitment as a career. After some initial doubts about whether the job was for her, or whether it would involve high-pressure sales, Emma attended a series of interviews and joined the team. She has never looked back and has worked her way up through the ranks.
Undoubtedly a factor in Emma’s success is her loyalty to the business, and she clearly considers herself as a sort of mini Personnel Selection. In fact, she sees her work with us as not so much a job, but more of a personal investment. It is as if her clients and candidates are personal to her. Add to this her motivated approach, discipline, and hard work and it is easy to see the formula that has made her climb the ranks to Branch Manager and why she will be with Personnel Selection for many years to come.
Talking to Emma you will soon find that her approach is based on quality and the high level of service that is the ethos of Personnel Selection. She says that she never makes a sales call, she makes a service call. For her, it is all about the clients’ needs, not the quick resolution, as is sometimes the case with national recruiters. Emma believes that working for a family business with a clear regional focus allows her and her team to think outside the box as they are not fixed into set patterns and processes. Of course, they are efficient, and she is the first to praise her long-standing team (many of which have also been with Personnel Selection for over a decade) for their hard work and dedication.
From the Frimley hub, where Emma is co-manager, she works with the team to share good practice and develop the service level on a daily basis.
Emma is a recruiter through and through and has no intention of changing that.
‘I more than like my job, I love what I do. Personnel Selection are great to work for, and the team I work with are the best I could ask for, the clients I work with are great as well, and together we place people into jobs that improve their lives. I get to do something I love, and I get paid for doing it. Why would I want to change that?’
