Well done Martin!
Big congratulations to Martin who works in our Brighton branch for receiving this delicious present from another very happy candidate. These yummy looking cakes arrived in the office from one of our long term temps who is heading back permanently to Spain.
What a lovely gesture from a guy who was very grateful for long term work found through Personnel Selection which has helped him improve his English language skills and enabled him to re-join his family business in a new role.

Honestly Mate
In my last blog I finished by advising readers to look for honesty as a key feature of any Agency they considered working with.
Thinking more about this it does seem that increasingly Clients are using the words trust, straightforward, no-nonsense and honest. We are living in times of expenses scandals’, banking hoodwinks, and fraud and I sense a strong reaction to this in business. Clients are explicitly demanding an open book approach and underlining that any sharp practices or hidden profits will be punished severely.
People seem willing to forgive other foibles and shortcomings provided the person they deal with is sincere and honest.
We don’t have to look very far to see poignant examples of how this may be affecting other current affairs. The Labour Leadership election is producing polls that no one could have predicted. Despite the warnings from senior party figures the membership seem drawn to Jeremy Corbyn like moths to a light and the explanation offered time and again is his open, honest approach, a form of anti-politics. Honest opinions vs spin.
Somewhat ironically we have a similar thing happening across the water. As if to prove that honesty is neither ‘Left’ nor ‘Right’ one is witnessing the rise of Donald Trump as the leading Republican candidate. Despite the clearly controversial views expressed it seems that again the openness and refreshing frankness of Donald is proving a winner with the electorate.
Maybe I’m adding 2 and 2 to get 5 but I honestly (pun intended) believe that having been deceived by politics, the press and the banks for too long we are now convinced that beauty is only skin deep. We will now ask the searching questions because our future bedfellows do not need to look great in the light, they need to be able to answer for themselves in the dark.
And now for something completely different…or is it
Great British Bake Off is back!
Why is it so popular? Sure, The cast is good. The format helps…3 bakes a week mean that everyone has a chance till the end. But there must be more to it. Ok , GBBO is more transparent than Masterchef. All mistakes seem to glare at us and there are no sauces or chutneys to hide behind.
I am no cook but I cant help thinking that the ability to master something that is so simple in concept will always fascinate us. Strictly come dancing is another clear example. The growth of ‘vintage’ and ‘retro’ trends lend weight to the argument that in an increasingly complicated ,confusing and concerning world dominated by technology we yearn for the simple pleasures .
Go GBBO!
Go Personnel Selection ! – simple , honest services
Social Media
As this blog comes to its natural end this time I am reminded by the word count that I’ve not yet reached the recommended length for social media blogs. Of course this is bizarre. Slaves to technology? Search engine children? Where are we headed?
To hit my target here are some reminders of why you may be here.
Jobs, Temp work, career advice, great clients and validated candidates.
IT’S WHAT WE DO BEST
PS News June/July 2015
Here’s a round up of some top recruitment news in the UK…..
1.Post election jobs surge….what’s the most sought after role in Britain & how social media is revolutionising the recruitment process.
According to CV-Library, the UK’s leading independent job board, admin jobs in Leeds faced more competition than any other job in any other region last month, receiving an average of 71 applicants per position.
In addition, the online recruitment site reviewed its nationwide job applications across each sector in May 2015, which revealed the following as the most competitive job sectors in the UK:
- Administration – 57.3 applicants per job
- Customer Services – 37 applicants per job
- Distribution – 36.2 applicants per job
- Manufacturing – 31.3 applicants per job
- Retail – 27.4 applicants per job
- Hospitality – 25.9 applicants per job
- Public Sector – 22.9 applicants per job
Sport, Politics and Partner Selection
One of the great things about Spring is the arrival of some iconic sporting moments.
The Grand National, The Boat Race(s !!) and The Augusta Masters to name but three. Great drama, admiral skills and in all 3 cases, nerves of steel.
In 2015 these events are being played out against a backdrop of a General Election. Of course it’s easy, popular and good fun to have a dig at the politicians and whilst they may not have nerves of steel their willingness to appear on TV with regularity and ‘take one for the team’ is almost admirable.
Get Professional help! Select your partner carefully though.
One thing so many sporting stars have taught us is this;
“I may have bucket loads of natural talent but there is always something a quality professional can teach me!”
Ivan Lendl won many matches but kept failing at Grand Slams till he invested heavily in specific coaches. Of course Ivan himself proved to be the key for Andy Murray in winning his first Grand Slam.
Tiger Woods, almost certainly the most natural talent ever in golf is notorious for seeking out the best coaches to fine tune all aspects of his game. However Peter Allis another prodigious natural talent and regarded as the best commentator of any sport believes Tiger is now over coached.
So my message remains valid, but carries a health warning too.
What are Politicians doing wrong?
From what we are told the major parties DO engage Professional help. They employ an army of advisers, PR gurus, style mentors etc etc. And yet still the reaction to them is at best neutral and often derogatory.
My thoughts are this, and this is where the link to running a business is pertinent
• Sports is ultimately about endeavor and giving 100%.
• With these qualities at the core then it is not surprising that good professional help can take it further, sometimes a bit, often a lot
• Politicians do not have the luxury of giving 100%. The backdrop of Party Politics requires that almost all communication has to be validated, censored and of course ‘spun’ until all the colour is washed out of it.
• People love to watch Sport …The winners and the triers.
• People cringe when they watch politicians. We know when someone is not giving 100% and that never sits well with us.
• Many of us understand why it is like this, but we still don’t enjoy it and when we witness politicians like Tony Benn and Boris Johnson we know it can be different.
Choose wisely
The message of this blog is simply this. When you choose a business to work with look for;
Getting Professionalism (PS is 45 years old!)
Getting 100% (referrals are key)
Getting Honesty (look us in the eye and make up your own mind)
No Capes Daaaarrrrliing – What we can learn from Madonna and The Incredibles.
Anyone who has seen the film the Incredibles will understand the meaning of my title. If you haven’t, the film is about a family of superheroes. During the story, Mr Incredible is told by the designer of his new super-suit that, no matter how cool it looks, a cape is a bad idea. She then goes on to recount numerous stories about how other heroes had been sucked into jet engines, dragged into tornadoes, fired off into space and so on because the cape got caught up in the hazard. When I saw Madonna fall on stage because of an elaborate cape at the Brit Awards, I am slightly ashamed to say I yelled “No capes Daaarllling” at the screen. We Didn’t Forget You! – Why Personnel Selection Didn’t Send You A Christmas Card This Year.
This year we looked at the whole Christmas card scenario and basically said ‘No, let’s not do it’.
Every year at Personnel Selection, we send out hundreds of Christmas cards. It is sort of a ritual in any business that come the end of September we all start to go through the familiar process of buying, processing and sending hundreds of cards. We do this to wish you all the very best and perhaps also to say a little thank you to our clients and candidates for being part of our year.
